Newspaper Stands Framed pastel on sanded paper $300
June 10, 2013
This pastel painting was done in 1993 before the Summit Diner corner was redesigned and updated. I liked the newspaper stands–they seem to have such distinct personalities and seem to be loitering along the sidewalk waiting for humans to walk by. See if you can spot all the things that have changed since this was painted.

Field at Lord Stirling Park Framed oil on canvas $800
I painted this on location at Lord Stirling Park in Basking Ridge. I had to return for a second day but the weather held. This was such a peaceful place to paint with birds singing all around. I saw a baby faun near where I was painting, left alone by it’s mother until it could walk. This was a memorable painting experience, indeed!

Briant Pond in Autumn Framed oil on board $400
This plein air painting was done from the back of my car parked along Morris Avenue. I was racing the rain and I won! I often use water based oil paint for the ease of cleanup while on location but rain is a real threat as rain drops can make marks on the painting. Briant Pond seems to be always changing in shape and vegetation. This was done in the autumn when the leaves were turning.

Approaching Summit Station- oil on canvas $500
This plein air painting was done in my car from a parking place. I wanted to capture what someone coming to pick up a traveler from NYC would see as they wait. It’s such a part of living in Summit, the connection with the City.

Union Place, Summit-Oil painting on board $350
This etching is from a series of prints I’ve done based on scenes along the train route into NYC or along the highways in NJ. My artist’s book, “Neither Here nor There” includes a number of these prints. There is a lonely suspended animation to that area between mega city and suburbs.

Summit Dump- oil on board $800
This plein air painting was done at the Summit Transfer Station, aka the Summit Dump. All aficionados of the dump will recognize it instantly. I wasn’t sure I would be allowed to paint there so I found a place to set up my easel where it would be out of the way. Just as I got my paint on the palette and was blocking out the composition I heard a shout and saw several workers running my way. Darn! As they got closer I realized they were offering to move the trucks out of the way!! I said, “NO, I want the trucks right where they are” and they kept them still till I finished!

Chatham Train Station-oil painting on canvas $600
This painting was done some time ago and copies were sold as the Fishawack Festival poster. NJ’s electric trains with all their structures are fascinating to me.
